the first one looks like it is the FXR frame, and that was a frame a lot of the older harley riders really liked.  out of what you posted that is what caught my eye the most.  some advantages to that bike would be that it is an older shovel head motor, so it hsould be easy to work on.  6500 doesnt seem like to steep of a price.  i would be interested to know what he means by waaay not stock.  also the front end has been changed from the narrow glide front end to a wide glide fron end.  I would wonder if that was because of a wreck, or just because the owner wanted a new front end.  research that FXR frame and you will read some good things about it.

also peaked interest since he is a shop, he might be able to make sure it fits me before going out the door, even if it's a few $$ more, the price seems good

It think way not stock is referenc to the no leaks bit. Not familiar with "convertable" though.

I have heard that for long rides, dyna frame is better than the softtail, but wondering if the older motor is a good choice for long trips (like this past summer - 1800 miles is 3 days)

the frame that is on that bike like i said is one that everyone raves about.  the dyna fram was redesigned in the late 90's, and HD actually did a couple of special vehicle ops runs.  i think those were badged as fxr2, and fxr3.  as for making it fit, I had a friend who was 4 ft 11 in tall and she got that frame to fit her.  the convertable is a model that harley has.  they came with a windshield and saddle bags from the factory and could easily be removed.  it was called a convertible since it would convert from a touring model to a cruiser model with little effort.

as far as long trips go, the HD motor is pretty bullet proof, and dirt simple to work on.  i am sure that if you take care of that shovel head motor it will take care of you.  i dont have a shovel head motor on my bike, I have an early fathead (aka twin cam 8Cool and I did 5600 miles on that in 13 days without a problem.  i now have about 58k on the motor and it is still solid and all i have ever done is oil changes.  no major motorwork has been necessary
