After some major pissing by mother nature and some over-pass hopping (pausing underneath to avoid much of the rain) - I managed to get to Centreville, VA by about 10pm. - AGAIN CAUGHT IN THE F'ING RAIN!!!
Anyway - it was WELL WORTH the trip.
The guys that helped me, Jason (double digit years with various bike knowledge and awarenesses) and Jay ( new to it all - but is in school to be a bike mechanic - still very knowledgeable and enjoys the work) and myself - I mostly held the little flashlight for those hard to see places. lol - both of these guys ride also, by the way - and for those fellow monkey riders that live for twisties and back roads...so does Jason.
At any rate - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these two guys to the rest of the Monkey Riders who are in or around the Centreville area or to anyone needing almost any kind of work done on almost any kind of bike. He works out of his garage, well lit, nicely set up, tools out of the wazoo!! Even has the carb sync-ing tool.
PICS ARE IN NO ORDER - just to show the work
Ok - so the work actually started at 10pm - I guess you can say "hi, I'm Derek - I'm a motorcycle addict" (from Cloudbreak's post) lol. But these two guys went right to it. Good work and workmanship, combined with good company.
So the Jet Kit fit - which means I have a 600 motor - so there was no motor swap as thought by Sree and others. Kind of a relief for me lol.
I learned so much while watching and asking questions, mostly just watching intensely - it was a really good experience.
Sorry these are the only pics, I seemed to not have gotten any of the the new jet kit and those TINY TINY SHINY new parts. GRRR
And oh man - the drilling of the plugs to get to the mixture screws - crazy scary to me - but Jason and Jay had it under control. So I guess it's safe to say that bike had never been jetted before, or else those plugs would have been gone.
So after everything was back together and screwed on, Jason test rode it.......came back....results...not good. Said with every gear change, the bike was losing acceleration and 4th gear was just dead. Typical with this kind of work - as stated in the troubleshooting directions that came with the kit - so I was not worried at all - especially with these guys around, just had to dive back in there and fix it....but what to fix?
Jason and Jay hit the nail on the head the first time!! Per the Jet Kit instructions...something about placing a washer or some kind of ring on the 2nd groove on the needle..per the troubleshooting guide for problems exactly like ours...that small...super tiny washer ring thing..needed to go up...ONE DANG GROOVE!!!
The Stage 1 Jet Kit is NOT designed for use with after market air filters...un-beknowest to me, I just installed a K&N airfilter the day before.
lol - not a problem though..obviously. Jason and Jay took out each needle...fixed the washer things and re-installed. PRESTO-CHANGO...work complete. Jason took it for another test ride and came back...boasted a seemingly insane 125mph in 3rd to 4th gear - obviously something this noob will NEVER experience hahaha.
After a chain tightning, brake flush, and cluth lever adjustment (which is so awesome right now - 2 fingers with a light squeeze) way better than the full hand squeeze all the way back to the grip way I had it.
JOB WELL DONE - 2:30AM which turns out to be not bad at all because most shops said it's about a 2-3 hour job and that was with no hiccups.
Again - a big thanks to Jason and Jay and the SAME DAY SERVICE big +++++. I hope both of you join up with the Monkey Riders and share your expertise and work. It would also be cool to have another mechanic in your location. Right now I think all we have Motoneko is Owings Mills, MD (just got their garage) and East End Cycles in Gaithersburg, MD. Other than that - that's all that I know off that is directly connected to Monkey Riders. So your location would add a closer stop for some of us Monkies down south. I'm sure you could talk to the website moderators about being in the "sponsor" location on the main page
Back on 66 towards home with an insane machine beneath me.
